Elon Musk unveils Neuralink

Former Tesla chairman Elon Musk has been out of the news recently after he was scolded for smoking marijuana on the Joe Rogan podcast and after he paid a $40 million fine to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for fraud charges back in September of last year.  However, he made an appearance this past Wednesday to announce his new venture called Neuralink.

What in the world is Neuralink?

The main principle behind Neuralink is to calculate how neurons operate within the nervous system.  For example, if you are looking to move raise your arm, then your brain would send a signal that travels to the muscles within the arm to lift the arm.  Neuralink is looking to gauge those signals for positive innovation in neuroscience.

When a person becomes paralyzed, then the signals that the neurons send to the body are blocked.  Neuralink is claiming that they have solved this problem so that paraplegics and quadraplegics could one day walk again.

How does Neuralink work?

The Neuralink would be a microchip inserted into the brain that would mimic the pulses sent out by the neurons throughout a person’s nervous system.  Those pulses would allow for a person to regain feeling within their extremities.

“Houston, we have a problem”

The problem is that the chip would be monitored by Neuralink.  That means that Neuralink would know the exact location of any person with their chip in their heads.  Neuralink could also shut the chip down so that a person would instantly become paralyzed.  This invasion of privacy is way too invasive even in today’s society in which a person’s activity can be monitored from his or her cell phone.  Basically, if this chip was placed in everyone’s head, then one person could control each and every person on this earth.  Do we really want to give Elon Musk that type of power?
