What is the inspiration behind your new single “25 Days”?
I started dating a guy who I could only see on the weekends and months later when he broke up with me out of the blue, I was heartbroken, there were so many things we never got to do together. Writing is my form of therapy and how I process things. I was having a hard time putting my feelings into words and when I really thought about it, the amount of time we actually got to spend together was way shorter than how long it felt. I joke around and say “hey, the least he could do was stick around a little longer so I’d have more songs to write”!
What made you discover your passion for creating an eclectic blend of your own sound? What places in your mind do you channel to craft your songs?
I struggle to put my music in a “genre box”! I love pop songs you hear on the radio and I equally love singer-songwriter music. I think the blend of the pop writing and acoustic music comes together for something that’s 100% me! I don’t really channel a place so much, I more get really in tune with my emotions. I try not to get in the way of my instincts and that’s when the magic comes!
What is the meaning behind the song’s title “25 Days;” and what does it hold for you?
“25 Days” is an estimate of how many days we actually spent together during our relationship. Sure, we were always in contact but if I could have, there was more I had hoped to have done together until it ended.
What are your favorite venues to perform at? and if you had to choose, do you feel more comfortable in the studio or onstage, and why?
I love really love more intimate venues! Ones that feel like “listening rooms”. I take a lot of pride in my songwriting and I love performing for people who want to hear the words and understand the meaning behind the songs!
How do you create your songs? What is the process like? Does it take you days, weeks, even longer? How does the perfect piece come together?
Most of the time I have 2 phases of writing. The first comes suddenly and I write down lyrics like poetry. Sometimes it’s just a tag that could sit in a chorus and sometimes it’s an entire verse. The second phase comes when I’m still feeling inspired and I develop the rest of a song from those lyrics. Other times, I’m feeling inspired and the lyrics and melody come together simultaneously and pretty fast! I really love collaborating as well so a co-writing session is always fun for me!
How did you create a sound throughout time that is so uniquely your own? What defines your sound to you?
It took me years to really find my sound. When you’re a young artist starting out it’s so easy to be influenced by what you think will give you an easier time “breaking through”. I’ve tried out different sounds because I love pop music but I always gravitated towards the music I listened to when first learning how to play guitar; James Taylor, Carole King, The Indigo Girls, etc. More recently, I became obsessed with listening to Ruston Kelly and artists like that, it really influenced my writing. I felt like I reconnected with the reason I love music in the first place.
What do you hope you accomplish musically as we head further into 2020?
I want to continue to connect with people through my music! Music can heal and if I can make someone feel something with my writing that means more to me than anything else!
