In a tweet on Monday, former Ohio Gov. John Kasich — who ran against Donald Trump in the 2016 Republican primary — became one of the party’s first public critics of the president’s recent tweets.

After telling unnamed Democratic congresswomen to ‘go back‘ to their countries of origin, Democrats have slammed his remarks as thinly veiled racism.

Kasich condemned the tweets in his own statement:

“What [Trump] said about Democrat women in Congress is deplorable and beneath the dignity of the office. We all, including Republicans, need to speak out against these kinds of comments that do nothing more than divide us and create deep animosity – maybe even hatred.”
