Charlize Theron opens up about allowing child to choose gender at age 3

After adopting a child she believed to be a boy in 2012, Charlize Theron said Jackson is now being raised as a girl.

The actress recalled the moment her toddler proclaimed a surprising gender identity.

“Yes, I thought she was a boy, too,” Theron said. “Until she looked at me when she was 3 years old and said, ‘I am not a boy.'”

Since then, the Academy Award winner has been raising Jackson as one of her “two beautiful daughters” in her effort to encourage the young child.

“They were born who they are and exactly where in the world both of them get to find themselves as they grow up, and who they want to be, is not for me to decide,” she said of her kids.

Theron credited her childhood in South Africa — “where people lived with half-truths and lies ad whispers and nobody said anything outright” — for prompting her to live her life differently.

“I was taught by my mom that you have to speak up; you have to be able to know that, when this life is over, you’ll have lived the truth you’re comfortable with, and that nothing negative can come from that.”

Though she recently elaborated, Theron previously referenced the issue. Several months ago, she expressed a desire to take her two daughters to see “Black Panther.”
