In a statement this week, an zoo in Illinois confirmed a flamingo on exhibit had been euthanized after an incident involving a child.
According a representative of the Bloomington zoo, a student threw a rock and broke the bird’s leg. Officials believe it was an accident and are working to ensure the elementary school student learns from the experience.
“A juvenile guest accidentally injured a flamingo on Monday by skipping a rock into the habitat,” said Miller Park Zoo Superintendent Jay Tetzloff. “Unfortunately, staff determined the best course of action given the animal’s injuries was to euthanize the bird.”
