The head of the Catholic Church is facing criticism from a number of priests and scholars in a new letter.

In a 20-page document, the conservative church leaders described the move as a “last resort” to address issues they say emanate from the Vatican.

Nineteen individuals added their name to the letter, including noted theologian Father Aidan Nichols.

“We take this measure as a last resort to respond to the accumulating harm caused by Pope Francis’s words and actions over several years, which have given rise to one of the worst crises in the history of the Catholic Church.”

Specifically, the signers found fault with the pontiff’s 2016 “Amoris Laetitia.” The church document signaled a need for additional compassion toward “imperfect” members of the church — including those who have been divorced.

The critical group went on to call out the pope’s outreach to and praise of protestant leaders.
