Nike had reportedly planned to release a line of sneakers featuring a Betsy Ross-inspired flag design. Reports indicate that brand spokesman and ex-NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick disagreed with the decision, prompting the company to reconsider.

Now Nike is facing backlash from the other side as Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey confirmed on Twitter that Nike’s product lineup has cost it a “major” financial investment from the state.

“Today was supposed to be a good day in Arizona, with the announcement of a major [Nike] investment in Goodyear, AZ,” the Republican governor wrote. “And then this news broke yesterday afternoon.”

Ducey continued in a string of tweets, asserting that his state is “doing just fine without Nike” and that he is “embarrassed” for the company because of the recent decision.

“We don’t need to suck up to companies that consciously denigrate our nation’s history,” he concluded.
