U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., levied a weighty claim against Attorney General William Barr this week.

After he refused to testify before the judiciary committee on Thursday, she alleged that he had lied to Congress. Pelosi referenced his testimony a day earlier before members of the corresponding committee in the Senate.

Barr faced a grilling by Democratic senators with wide-ranging questions about his handling of the Mueller report.

“What is deadly serious about this is that the attorney general of the United States was not telling the truth to the Congress of the United States,” she said. “That is a crime.”

The Department of Justice responded to the speaker’s assertion through spokeswoman Kerri Kupec.

“Speaker Pelosi’s baseless attack on the Attorney General is reckless, irresponsible, and false,” she said in a statement.
