After advice columnist E. Jean Carroll accused President Donald Trump of raping her in a New York City department store dressing room more than two decades ago, he denied the claims in a statement that itself brought additional criticism.
“I’ll say it with great respect,” Trump said. “Number one, she’s not my type. Number two, it never happened. It never happened, OK?”
Even within his own party, the rhetoric rubbed some the wrong way.
U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said she wouldn’t weigh in on the specifics of Carroll’s claim. She did, however, have a reaction to Trump’s denial.
“I thought the president’s comment, ‘She’s not my type,’ or something along those lines, was extremely bizarre,” she said.
