A Republican lawmaker is facing backlash over his proclamation that he is a “person of color” because he is white.
U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly’s comments came amid criticism of President Donald Trump for what many deemed a racist attack on minority women serving in Congress.
“You know, they talk about people of color,” the Pennsylvania lawmaker said in an interview on Tuesday. “I’m a person of color. I’m white. I’m Anglo Saxon. People say things all the time, but I don’t get offended. With a name like Mike Kelly you can’t be from anyplace else but Ireland.”
Kelly later claimed that the reporter “mischaracterized” the remark.
“It’s time to stop fixating on our differences and focus on what unites us,” he stated.
