Democratic presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg has rehashed a nagging controversy from President Donald Trump’s past.
In a recent interview, the South Bend, Ind., mayor asserted that Trump used his “privileged status to fake a disability in order to avoid serving in Vietnam.”
The president’s draft deferments decades ago have been a recurring source of debate among his critics. Buttigieg said he has “a pretty dim view” of Trump’s decision to cite bone spurs as a reason to avoid service.
“This is actually really important because I don’t mean to trivialize disability, but I think that’s exactly what he did,” Buttigieg said.
