After U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., was able to win her first race, a civics teacher in her district said his own students led to his decision to throw his hat in the ring as a Republican hoping to unseat her next year.
John Cummings, a 59-year-old ex-cop, said he knows the odds are stacked against him. But it was Ocasio-Cortez herself who ultimately gave him the confidence to seek his party’s nomination.
“But to just come from the outside and take somebody on is really difficult,” he said, referencing the fact that the 29-year-old former bartender was able to do exactly that.
“It was pointed out to me by my students that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez pretty much made my excuse — and I’ll use their quotes — ‘a lame one,'” he said.
Bronx resident Ruth Papazian has also declared her candidacy as a Republican in next years congressional race.
