‘It’s our America’: Michelle Obama seeks to unify the nation amid political discord

While President Donald Trump and his supporters continue to engage in a war of words with the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, former first lady Michelle Obama struck a unifying note with a recent Twitter message.

“What truly makes our country great is its diversity,” she wrote. “I’ve seen that beauty in so many ways over the years.”

Even as some seek to excuse a recent Trump rally chant of “send her home” in reference to an Somali-born American citizen serving in the U.S. House of Representatives, Obama’s tweet signaled that there is more than enough room for Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., and Americans of all types.

“Whether we are born here or seek refuge here, there’s a place for us all,” she concluded. “We must remember it’s not my America or your America. It’s our America.”
