After a widely criticized decision that the 16-year-old defendant in a rape trial should be tried as a juvenile, a New Jersey judge has reportedly agreed to step down from the bench effective immediately.

Monmouth County Superior Court Judge James Troiano cited the teen’s grades in school as well as the fact that he “came from a good family” in requesting leniency in the case.

An appeals court subsequently overturned his recommendation and the judge has faced intense scrutiny in recent months.
