Following President Donald Trump’s controversial statement that there would be “nothing wrong” with accepting political dirt from foreign foes, the chairwoman of the Federal Election Commission released a statement reiterating applicable law.

“I would not have thought that I needed to say this,” Ellen Weintraub tweeted in a caption accompanying her statement on the matter.

“Let me make something 100 percent clear to the American public and anyone running for public office: It is illegal for any person to solicit, accept, or receive anything of value from a foreign national in connection with a U.S. election,” she stated.
