Days after he addressed lawmakers in an effort to continue the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund, former NYPD Detective Luis Alvarez was dead from cancer linked to his service in the aftermath of the 2001 terror attacks.
The 53-year-old’s funeral was held this week and counted comedian Jon Stewart, who joined him on Capitol Hill last month, and U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., among its hundreds of attendees.
“Fmr. Detective Luis Alvarez, 9/11 first responder, & loving father of 3 sons, left us far too soon,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote. “He spent his last days fighting for the 9/11 Victim’s Compensation Fund. Some issues should be above partisanship or delay. We must pass the bill as soon as Congress reconvenes.”
