In the days since the House Judiciary Committee voted to hold him in contempt, Attorney General William Barr has repeatedly joked about the development.
During a ceremony marking former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein’s exit from the Justice Department, Barr quipped that it must be “a record” for an incoming attorney general to face a contempt vote.
A subsequent exchange between Barr and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi provided another example, according to one witness. The California Democrat has previously accused the attorney general of lying to Congress.
They had a brief encounter during the National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service on Wednesday.
“As those seated on the platform waited for the president’s arrival in an adjacent tent, Attorney General Barr approached Speaker Pelosi, shook her hand and said loudly, ‘Madam Speaker, did you bring your handcuffs?'” the witness recalled.
Pelosi reportedly shot back that “the House sergeant-at-arms was present at the ceremony should an arrest be necessary.”
Barr reportedly laughed and kept moving.
