Multiple sources close to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio say he is close to announcing his presidential candidacy.
Earlier projections indicated he would throw his hat into the crowded ring this week. Now, he is projected to make it official as early as his 58th birthday on Wednesday.
Among his constituents, however, a Democratic primary field of nearly two dozens doesn’t need de Blasio in it. A recent Quinnipiac University poll found more than 3 in 4 New York residents wanted to see him in the race.
Mike Casca, a spokesperson for de Blasio’s Fairness PAC, said he could not “announce something without a decision,” but did not categorically deny a forthcoming announcement.
As for the mayor, he has cited his family’s reaction to a presidential bid as his “number one concern” in making a decision.
