Citing a “secret meeting” by the organization she had led for less than a year, Dr. Leana Wen announced on Twitter this week that she had been removed as president of Planned Parenthood after less than a year in the leadership position.
“I am leaving because the new Board Chairs and I have philosophical differences over the direction and future of Planned Parenthood,” she wrote.
Wen declared that she will “always stand with Planned Parenthood” and resolves to maintain her “life’s work and mission of caring for and fighting for women, families and communities.”
The interim president is set to be current board member Alexis McGill Johnson.
Planned Parenthood Board Chair Aimee Cunningham also confirmed the exit in a statement.
“We thank Dr. Leana Wen for her service to Planned Parenthood in such a pivotal time and extend our best wishes for her continued success.”
