The White House press secretary attempted to turn the tables on House Democrats calling for the attorney general’s resignation.

William Barr has refused to appear before the judiciary committee for testimony scheduled for Thursday.

He has reportedly cited the fact that lawmakers want to allow aides to question him as his reason. Sarah Sanders picked up where he left off, slamming Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., who chairs the committee.

“It’s surprising to find out he has actually lost confidence in himself and his capability to do his job,” she said. “If he can’t and he’s not capable of asking the attorney general questions, maybe he should step down and resign and allow someone else to.”

Barr testified before members of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday. Following the often heated and largely partisan hearing, some Democrats called on him to resign.

Sen. Kamala Harris, a California Democrat and 2020 presidential candidate, was among them. She also hammered the attorney general during her round of questioning.

He continues to face criticism over his response to the recently released Mueller report.
