Authorities in California say a young girl was “an absolute hero” following her parents’ death in a violent murder-suicide earlier this month.

According to ABC News, the 46-year-old father is believed to have fatally shot his 38-year-old wife, who was in bed at the time. Police say he then turned the gun on himself.

Police reports indicate the incident occurred in Los Angeles on April 11 with two children in the home — a young girl and her baby brother.

“The baby is a miracle baby and the little girl is an absolute hero — she’s an absolute hero,” said Los Angeles Police Capt. Maureen Ryan, of the Topanga division.

Ryan said the child was able to care for herself and the infant boy for “several days” until authorities responded to the location on April 14.

It was unclear from initial reports why the response came days later, but police say they received reports of an “assault with a deadly weapons shots fired” in connection with the apparent murder-suicide. Additional details, including the identities of anyone involved, were not immediately available.

Upon locating the children, they were reportedly transported to an area hospital and given a clean bill of health. From there, they were reportedly taken into the custody of the Los Angles County Department of Children and Family Services.
