‘Smoking and e-cigarette free’: Netflix unveils new on-screen tobacco policy after ‘Stranger Things’ backlash

The hit Netflix series “Stranger Things” is leading the streaming service to revise its approach to on-screen smoking.

During the first two seasons, the show reportedly depicted tobacco use in each episode. The issue sparked backlash and resulted in a reaction from the company.

“Going forward, all new projects that we commission with ratings of TV-14 or below for series or PG-13 or below for films, will be smoking and e-cigarette free — except for reasons of historical or factual accuracy,” Netflix wrote in a statement.
