On the day Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey signed a controversial anti-abortion bill into law, a staunch conservative Christian televangelist took aim at its harsh language.

The law would punish abortion providers with a sentence of as long as 99 years. It makes abortion at all stages of a pregnancy illegal, with only the slimmest of exceptions to protect the life of the mother.

“I think Alabama has gone too far,” Pat Robertson said in a television appearance on Wednesday.

He called it an “extreme law” drafted to prompt a judicial challenge to the 1973 decision legalizing abortion.

“My humble view is that this is not the case we want to bring to the Supreme Court because I think this one will lose,” Robertson said.

Acknowledging that conservatives in the state are “trying to do something,” he reiterated his belief that this is not the best course of action.
