Days after U.S. Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan confirmed he no longer identified as a Republican, he offered some additional context to his departure.

Having been the only congressman in his party calling for an impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump, he said his decision to leave the party has been made “in recent weeks and months,” during which time he said he has become increasingly disillusioned with American politics.

“So certainly, in the most recent Congress — in this current Congress — is where I got to the point where I said I don’t think I can keep doing it the way I’ve been doing it,” Amash said. “I think I have to try doing something else — to try to make a difference in a different way.”
