Authorities in New Jersey say a 21-month-old is dead after the child was left alone inside a hot car for more than two hours.

Chaya Shurkin, 25, was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment following the incident last month. Upon arrival at the scene, police say a neighbor was at the home attempting to resuscitate the young victim.

Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer issued a statement on the incident:

“A thorough and extensive investigation revealed that the child had been left alone in Shurkin’s motor vehicle for approximately two-and-one-half hours with the car turned off, in the heat. The investigation determined that the act of leaving the child in the car unattended for such a long period of time was the cause and manner of the child’s death.”
