President Donald Trump has faced repeated criticism for his military deferments during the Vietnam War.

During his state visit to the U.K. this week, he discussed his lack of service. Trump said during an interview that hew was “never a fan” of the war he avoided in part because he was diagnosed with bone spurs.

When asked for thoughts about his own situation, he said he “would not have minded at all” if he had been called to serve.

“I would’ve been honored,” Trump said. “But I think I make up for it right now.”

He cited “rebuilding our military at a level that it’s never seen before” as supposed evidence of that belief.
