After learning of the action by the Senate Intelligence Committee and its Republican chair, President Donald Trump expressed surprise over the subpoena his son, Donald Jr., received.

“Frankly, for my son, after being exonerated, to now get a subpoena to go again and speak again after close to 20 hours of telling everybody that would listen about a nothing meeting — yeah, I’m surprised,” he said on Thursday.

Trump claimed that Sen. Richard Burr of North Carolina, who chairs the committee, was “saying there was no collusion two or three weeks ago.”

For that reason, he said he was caught off guard by the subpoena.

“But I was very surprised to see my son,” Trump said. “My son’s a very good person. Works very hard. The last thing he needs is Washington, D.C.”
