After allowing a crowd to disparage U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., with a chant of ‘send her back’ for about 13 seconds during a recent rally, President Donald Trump sought to distance himself from their message amid growing backlash within his party.

By Friday, however, he was apparently on the crowd’s side again, as evidenced by his answer to a reporters question on the continued controversy.

“Those are incredible people,” he said of those at the Wednesday rally in North Carolina. “They are incredible patriots. But I’m happy when a congresswoman goes and say, ‘I’m going to be the president’s nightmare.'”

Trump also insisted that there be a penalty for political dissent.

“You can’t talk that way about our country,” he claimed. “Not when I’m president. These women have said horrible things about our country and the people of our country.”
