As the crowded Democratic presidential field gears up for this week’s first batch of debates, several are starting to promote specific policy proposals.
Former U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke is expected to announce specifics about his plan for a “war tax” during his appearance at an event in Tampa, Florida, on Monday.
Reports indicate he wants to improve healthcare and other services for veterans.
As part of his plan to pay for those programs, he reportedly favors assessing a tax on U.S. households without active military members or veterans. It would go into effect at the start of any new wars.
But O’Rourke also wants to pull American troops out of ongoing wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, using half the current budget for those wars to benefit veterans who served in them.
