As backlash continues to reverberate from Chicago, where actor Jussie Smollett is accused of having orchestrated a fake hate crime against himself, his costars are presenting “a united front” in calling for his return.
The “Empire” star was cut from the show earlier this year as he faced criminal allegations. Though the charges were dropped, he was required to forfeit his bond and local officials continue to decry his alleged actions.
Nevertheless, a group of actors from the Fox series penned a letter pleading their former colleague’s case.
“Together, as a united front, we stand with Jussie Smollett and ask that our co-star, brother and friend be brought back for our sixth season of Empire,” the cast wrote.
Citing the “extreme political climate in our country,” the letter cites an unjust “system of justice and the court of public opinion” in defending Smollett.
The signers went on to express confidence that “fans will welcome our ‘Jamal’ back into the family as enthusiastically” as they would.
For their part, series co-creator Lee Daniels said producers are “in discussions” regarding the fate of Smollett’s character.
