Where Are Thoughts and Prayers Now?

“Thoughts and prayers,” is the response from Republican lawmakers when there is yet another mass shooting. Whenever there is something that might detract from their stance on something like gun control, they send their thoughts and prayers.

However, when it comes to regulating a woman’s body they have all the answers. In less than a month, nine states have introduced legislation banning abortions. It is clear with the Trump flouting the law at every turn, these lawmakers are hoping to overturn Roe V. Wade.

It’s the perfect storm for these legislators, Trump can distract from a controversy that affects more than half of populations life. Make no mistake, banning abortion is just the first assault on the rights that have been granted to minorities via The Supreme Court.

Stealing The Court

Mitch McConnell is single-handedly responsible for weaponizing The Supreme Court in this case. If the Senate Majority Leader had followed protocol Merrick Garland would have at least had a confirmation hearing. It didn’t happen because of McConnell’s racism and hatred of President Obama. Or even normal Senate protocol.

What happened instead was Neil Gorsuch was forced through the process after Trump took office. Then Justice Anthony Kennedy resigned without warning and Brett Kavanaugh was forced through the system again. For the first time, landmark decisions were in danger of being overturned by truly activists judges. Justices that Trump feels owes him favors.

One of those favors will be banning abortions and turning the rights of women back over to cisgendered, straight, white men. True Kay Ivey, Governor of Alabama signed that state’s bill into law, but it was written by the aforementioned demographic.

Women First, Gays Next

Republicans are great at having these issues bubble up just in time for an election. For most of 2016 and 2017, they tried to repeal the Affordable Care Act to no avail. With the 2018 midterm elections, they used healthcare as their platform. It did not go well for them. For 2020 they will use abortion as the major issue and it is possible they will sway voters.

Trump kicked off the assault with an assessment of what happens after a baby is born that is so fictional, it makes Game of Thrones seem to be biographical. He said at a rally in Green Bay, “the mother meets with the doctor. They take care of the baby, they wrap the baby beautifully. And then the doctor and the mother determine whether or not they will execute the baby.” Where he got that information from is anyone’s guess.

What we do know is abortion is on his mind. When something is on his mind, it becomes a big issue for the country. Looking at issues like the Muslim Ban and the Transgender Military Ban it obvious he will lean on the court to agree with him. He will yell and scream about the lower courts ruling against him. But when it comes to The Supreme Court, he will relax and say they will vote for his position. And they will.

First, it will be abortion and then gay marriage.

Laws Gone Wild

What Republicans are hoping for is to keep people in poverty. Forcing women to have babies they don’t want or can’t afford is one way to ensure this. By being more restrictive over the woman’s body and letting a rapist off with nothing more than a slap on the wrist, ensures women stay poor.

There is no doubt the men who crafted the abortion bans in Georgia, Alabama, Ohio, and  Missouri hate women. If they didn’t, how could they write legislation that offers no protection for women who are raped? Even a decent person would recognize it is wrong to force someone to become a parent when they don’t want to.

Adoption may be an option but these laws still force women to carry unwanted babies. It’s not as if these men and women care about children. Their reaction when it came out that Trump was keeping immigrant children in cages was telling. Instead of being empathetic towards the children, they immediately sprung to their demaguage’s talking points.

Actually the only talking points they have. It’s Obama’s fault or Hillary’s emails. Even with the abortion laws, they cannot successfully argue without mentioning a prominent Democrat’s name. Because they know these laws are not designed to protect anyone but the status quo. They are meant to keep the poor in poverty and to assist in stealing more elections.

Trump and his cronies may think they have finally found a way to take away a woman’s right to choose. They need to remember this is the beginning of the fight, and the war on women will not be won by those who laugh at children in cages. It will be won by strong, fierce women who want and deserve the same rights as men. Maybe we’ll send thoughts and prayers to them.
