“Missing” is a new song by singer-songwriter John Chandler. John appeared on Nickelodeon and MTV as a teen when he was part of the boyband 6PIECE. “Missing” is the first song from his upcoming solo EP. Its music video is available online at: https://youtu.be/_mf_5Kuw86c
At 16, John was discovered by Maurice Starr, the man behind New Kids on the Block and New Edition. 6PIECE opened for NSYNC on the Pop Odyssey Tour and shared the stage with acts like Alicia Keys, Jagged Edge, and Trisha Yearwood. The invention of streaming hindered the group’s success and now, as an adult, John is exploring the world of self-discovery and songwriting. He recently discussed his new musical direction via an exclusive interview.
Meagan Meehan (MM): When did you first realize that you wanted to be a musical artist?
John Chandler (JC): I always sang in church as a little boy, but never knew it could be a career until much later. When I saw people perform, it always captivated me. I knew I wanted to do that.
MM: What was it like to be discovered as a teen?
JC: It was very validating to have a music mogul believe in your talent at such a young age. It did make it harder to be patient, though, later in life. I always wanted things to happen as fast as they did before.
MM: What do you remember most about live concerts and touring?
JC: I remember the adrenaline. I would always get super nervous right before I went on stage, but then it was such a rush once we got out there and started performing.
MM: Had it not been for streaming, how big do you think 6PIECE would have gotten?
JC: It’s really hard to tell. We were unique in that we were on a hip-hop label, so it opened a lot of doors. Keeping six guys together is tough though, people get married and start having families…
MM: What events inspired “Missing” and did the lyrics or beat come to you first?
JC: I was feeling a bit lost in NY. I remember the sun coming up one morning and feeling like I was in the wrong place. I didn’t recognize my life and really needed a change. My Dad is the one who told me that nothing is necessarily wrong with your life, but something’s missing.
MM: What is your favorite lyric in the song and why?
JC: “The sun goes down, like whiskey on a plane, in my hometown, everybody knows my name, but I’ve changed, so no one knows me.” I think it paints such a picture. I always think and write when I’m on a plane, because you can’t go anywhere. Also, I like whiskey. (laughs)
MM: How would you describe your sound today?
JC: I think my sound is kind of eclectic. My songs almost always start at the piano, so there’s frequently an element of instrumentation. My voice is pretty deep, so I like vibey, soulful melodies.
MM: Who came up with the concept for the music video and how long did it take to film?
JC: I came up with the video concept with the director, Cooper Smith. Because of Covid, we couldn’t fly to NY and LA, so I told him what vibe I wanted, and he made it happen in Nashville.
MM: What has been the best thing about working in the music industry so far?
JC: Meeting so many cool people. A lot of my friends are artists and producers, so I love collaborating.
MM: What projects are coming up for you soon?
JC: I’m releasing an EP! I really hope I can start performing again soon. Everything is so up in the air currently with the world, but it’s a great time to be creative.
