“Move, I’m Gay!” is a hilarious podcast show hosted by Francisco “Franny” and Brendan “Brenda,” two polar-opposite personalities who dish on entertainment, historical facts, and even politics. Taped live each week from their studio in Portland, Oregon, the show has gained a national following on Spotify and an impressive presence on Instagram. They recently debuted their 100th episode!
Franny and Brenda discussed their show and more via an exclusive interview.
Meagan Meehan (MM): How did you discover your love for talk radio and why did you decide to start working together?
Brendan: I’ve always been obsessed with radio and podcasting and was looking for something in that realm to delve into. Francisco and I had been talking about the project for years and decided to jump into it after we both had different medical moments of recovery.
MM: How did you meet?
Francisco: We met through my brother, maybe 15 years ago?
MM: Why do you think your personalities mesh so well?
Francisco: It’s kind of an opposites attract scenario.
MM: The title of your podcast is so funny. How did you choose it?
Francisco: There is a YouTube video of a gay man interacting with his colleagues in an office. It was really hilarious, but there is one moment where someone is in his way and he screams “Move I’m Gay!” It has always stuck with us and seemed like a natural title when we were talking about doing the project.
MM: You have the alter-egos of Brenda and Franny. So, how similar are these personalities to Francisco and Brendan?
Brendan: They are not far off from our actual personalities. Obviously, everything is a bit embellished for the show, but really these are nicknames that both of us have gone by from close friends for years.
MM: What have been some of the most memorable topics you have discussed?
Francisco: I would say when Brendan got catfished on Tinder and was coming to terms with it in real time on the show. Besides that, showcasing news and people within the LGBTQ+ community.
MM: How did you grow your audience?
Francisco: Just naturally, really! Through word of mouth and social media. We also do advertisements and giveaways with local brands, so that has helped to get the word out.
MM: What has been the best part of working on this show?
Brendan: Becoming more knowledgeable about current events, specifically within the LGBTQ+ community. Getting to fully understand the ins and outs of the podcasting world. From production, editing, hosting, to distribution and ad negotiations. It’s a whole world of media that we had to navigate from the ground up, so that has been really eye opening and fruitful.
MM: What are your ultimate goals for the show and your careers?
Francisco: Growing our audience even more is the ultimate goal. Ideally, we would like to get more merch, and do a live show or maybe branch out and do another project.
Brendan: I would like to make our own LGBTQ+ network and focus on that and the more operational side of podcasting.
MM: What’s coming up next?
Brendan: A live show at some point. Covid tried to keep us from getting out to our people, but we simply told her, move, Covid, we’re gay.
