Que is a sustainable alternative lifestyle brand that is currently seeking crowdfunding support for the development of their innovative tote bag. Que has a mission to reduce plastic waste by creating practical and stylish products and their brand new “Everywhere Convertible Totepack” is presently being launched on Kickstarter.

The Everywhere Convertible Totepack is the essential multi-functional bag that offers maximum comfort and versatility. The tote is designed to keep essential items organized; special features include a padded laptop pocket, front-access compartment, a hidden insulated bottle pocket to keep drinks hot or cold longer, magnetic closures for convenience, luggage sleeve, water-resistant zippers with anti-theft zipper lock, and adjustable and straps that can be hidden. Wear this design as a backpack, throw it over the shoulder as a tote, or carry in-hand for ultimate functionality and versatility. It is made from 100% RPET recyclable materials from 35 plastic bottles saved from landfill and 100% natural materials for the bag straps. Even the packaging is made of 100% recyclable cardboard, so nothing goes to landfill. Thoughtfully built to be water resistant, durable, and lightweight and easy to take on the go.

With the goal to raise $10,000, que plans to utilize funds for mass production. Exclusive pre-order packages are tiered out for one bag from $99 to $139 and two bags from $218 to $250, where pledgers will receive the que Totepack of their chosen color and set to begin shipping this May. Que was founded in 2016 Jean Wu and Kevin Shen and soon released their first invention, a collapsible water bottle. The first collapsible, plastic-free reusable water bottle raised more than $600,000 in crowdfunding.

Jean Wu, the Co-Founder of Que, recently discussed this mission via an exclusive interview.

Meagan Meehan (MM): How did you discover your love for inventing and why did you name your company Que?

Jean Wu (JW): It came from the word “queue” which means ‘get in line’. We wanted to invite people to join our movement of going sustainable and start from our everyday life. Get in line and be the next one to start making the change now.

MM: How tough was it to start a company and keep it afloat?

QueJW: Extremely extremely tough, actually more than tough. The ‘starting part’ wasn’t actually the toughest but the ‘keeping it afloat’ part was. At the beginning of company, all you wanted to do is to ‘put things together’ and ‘get it to work’, and it was difficult in the sense that you started from ground up, but it was easier as the goal was clear and you didn’t really have many expectations. But there were probably hundreds of times that we thought about quitting after we started the company because of either personal reasons or financial difficulties during the pandemic especially. Keep moving and keep going, growing the company will always be the hardest part of the business.

MM: How did you start working together?

JW: We got married in 2014 and started working together ever since. We just knew we both wanted to start something on our own and our different areas of specialties made us perfect business partners.

MM: How did you get the idea for tote bag?

JW: It was a typical story of ‘I didn’t like anything out there so I wanted to make my own’. As a woman, I just don’t love backpacks, but they seem to be the only ones that have a laptop sleeve or have organizing pockets, none with a tote bag which is what women use every day. I wanted something that you could easily match your outfits with, dress down or dress up, casual or professional, that one does it all. So yes, I had to design and make it my own.

MM: Was the bag easier or harder to design than your first product, a water bottle?

JW: Slightly easier as it wasn’t as inventive or say ‘innovative’ as the water bottle. The mechanism of the collapsible bottle was novel and never done before. There have always been bags, we just reimagined it to be a better bag. We DID invent the hidden water bottle pocket with the magnetic closure though, that has never been done before and I absolutely love it!

MM: What do you like most about crowdfunding?

JW: It’s just a great platform for exposure. It’s also a great place to test the water and get initial market responses.

MM: How long did the tote take to design?

JW: 11 months.

MM: What has been the most memorable part of your job as an inventor?

QueJW: The first time I showcased my products at trade shows where you meet directly with business owners and retailers and hear them say how much they love my products.

MM: What are your ultimate goals for the future of Que?

JW: We want to become a brand that lasts and stays, continue to grow our brand and expand our products. We already have a few new products in the pipeline. We want to become a company like Dr. Martens but as in sustainable home and travel goods (they are my favorite shoes), that will always supply quality products to market and win our reputation as so.

MM: What is coming up next for you and is there anything else that you would like to mention?

JW: We will focus more on our new bags and there will be a few more bags to complete our bag line. A few new products in home goods category in the pipeline as well, I promise they are awesome and refreshing so stay tuned.
