“Undercover Summer” is a new song by singer and songwriter Tom Goss that is being released along with a music video and fragrance! The song and video are about having fun and enjoying life together, poolside, under the sun. The fragrance is a blend of coconut oil and suntan lotion that transports fans into the bikini-clad party.
Tom recently discussed his music and more via an exclusive interview.
Meagan Meehan (MM): When did you first realize that you wanted to be a singer and how did you break into the industry?
Tom Goss (TG): When I was in college, I started to understand the power that music had to heal and bring people together. I was disillusioned by what pop stars were using that power to promote. I wanted to create music that would help bring positivity into the world.
MM: What typically comes to you first, the lyrics of a song or it’s melody?
TG: Typically, it all comes at once. A chord progression sparks some sort of mood, then a melody comes out, often with lyrics already attached. You’d be surprised at the clever stuff that comes out when you stop trying to control it.
MM: How did the concept for “Undercover Summer” come to you?
TG: “Undercover Summer” is a collaboration with Deven Green and Ned Douglas. Ned wrote that fun bassline and started fleshing out the track. Deven and I went into the other room to start writing lyrics and melody. We knew we wanted to write something that was summery and fun, so we started gearing our lyrics towards that. We wanted the listener to feel like they were at the beach or a summer’s eve party. I’m not sure where the actual term “Undercover Summer” came from but I’m glad we wrote it!
MM: How did you get into making the fragrance and combining it with your music?
TG: I didn’t make the fragrance, Brent at SmellBent.com did. Brent is a friend of Deven and Ned’s and when we started talking about the music video, adding a summertime scent seemed like an obvious choice. It was really fun to collaborate on something that was all encompassing.
MM: What inspired the theme of the music video and how long did it take to film?
TG: We really wanted to just have the most fun possible. To us, that’s a California pool party. We shot the video over two days in sunny Palm Springs, CA!
MM: What was it like to write music through the Covid lockdown?
TG: Writing music is often a fairly private experience, so I wouldn’t say it was any different than any other time. Even if you’re collaborating, you’re collaborating with one or two other folks and it can be done over Zoom. It was easy enough to create environments that were safe and creative.
MM: What has been the best thing about working in the music industry so far?
TG: I feel grateful to be able to be creative on a daily basis. Furthermore, I am grateful to be surrounded by other wonderful and creative folks, like Deven and Ned!
MM: What projects are coming up for you soon? Is there anything else that you would like to discuss?
TG: I’m releasing a single every month throughout 2021. Next up is a song called “Everything” that was written with my friend Susan Ruth and mixed by “Undercover Summer” producer, Ned Douglas.
