The Upcycle Junction Market is an exciting new event that will be coming to Brooklyn’s Flatbush Junction Market on July 14, 2019.The Upcycle Junction Market is an outdoor marketplace that promotes the sale of sustainable products created by entrepreneurial artists.
Moreover, the original hand-made creations sold at the market will be crafted using reused items courtesy of Material for The Arts (MFTA). Thus, everything in the market is entirely eco-friendly and promotes the recycling of salvaged materials.
The 2019 Upcycle Junction will be the premiere year and is excited to debut at Brooklyn’s popular Hillel Plaza. The Flatbush Nostrand Junction—which supports small businesses—was very supportive of this endeavor which aims to help local stores upgrade their image so that they can appeal to a new generation of shoppers.
Each of the artists selected to participate in the Upcycle Junction is dedicated to creating original items that are practical, beautiful, or both and made from reused and reclaimed materials.
In essence, the market is a celebration of reuse and the ability to find ways to avoid sending items to landfills. This approach is a way to embrace environmentalism and artistry. Anyone who purchases a product at the Upcycle Junction Market will essentially be making a donation for the planet and the local ecology of NYC artisans.
Ten local artists will participate in the Upcycle Junction. The artwork includes paintings, sculptures, jewelry, and accessories.
Moreover, the MFTA will offer a free workshop for all age to create artwork from reclaimed material. In honor of the event, the NYC Department of Sanitation will offer educational materials about compost, recycling, and other programs offered by the Bureau of Recycling and Sustainability at DSNY and decals for residential recycling bins.
This project is helmed by The Junction BID’s Kenneth Mbonu who is The Executive Director of the Flatbush Nostrand Junction BID. Kenneth collaborated with artist Yasmin Gur the creative director of Artbizfusion which is a consulting company that specializes in facilitating connections between neighborhood businesses and artists. Materials for the Arts helped Artbizfusion to make this program a reality.
