Zip Top founder and CEO, Rebecca Finell recently discussed this product via an exclusive interview.
Meagan Meehan (MM): How did you discover your talent for inventing and what gave you the idea for Zip Top?
Rebecca Finell (RF): When I was in third grade, I won an invention competition called “Invent America.” I guess I have been inventing ever since. I saw the lack of quality or easy to use product in the reusable space as an opportunity to do it better.
MM: How long did it take to invent and patent this new product?
RF: Five mins to invent, more than two years to figure out how to make it, and an additional year or two for all the international patents.
MM: How did you break into the food storage industry?
RF: I went to the industry trade show where Zip Top was a huge hit. We were awarded Editor’s pick from Good Housekeeping at that show.
MM: What are the biggest benefits of Zip Top?
RF: They stand up, stay open and zip shut. made the USA, won’t rip or tear, plastic free, made of pure silicone. No fillers. Super easy to use and clean!
MM: How did you decide on these specific colors?
RF: I wanted colors that work well in the kitchen with food. We are using a super clear material so you can see everything well in your refrigerator.
MM: What kinds of feedback have you gotten about Zip Top so far?
RF: We have thousands of 5-star reviews sharing how much people love using Zip Tops. They appreciate how easy they are to use and that they get clean in the dishwater. I hear about people “getting rid of all the lids” in their storage drawers every day.
MM: What other projects are you working on right now and might you invent other items in the future?
RF: I have several line extensions for the Zip Top brand as well as other eco-friendly products that I will make in the future. I plan to focus the rest of my career on making an impact there.
MM: What are your ultimate goals for the future of Zip Tops and is there anything else that you would like to mention?
RF: I hope we can continue to make a dent in plastic waste across the globe while making it easy for people to make the switch.
