‘90 Day Fiancé: Self-Quarantined:’ TLC To Air Spinoff With 40 Past Cast Members

Chantel 90 Day Fiance

With the world on COVID-19 lockdown, what could be better than seeing past cast members of 90 Day Fiancé in self-isolation? TLC has had a brainwave to do just that with a brand-new, spinoff show, 90 Day Fiancé: Self-Quarantined.

TLC announced the new, five-episode limited series on Thursday and it is set to premiere on April 20.

90 Day Fiancé: Self-Quarantined coming soon

Think about it. Who is better to have meaningful conversations via video chat than the long-distance couples from previous seasons of 90 Day Fiancé? In fact, this makes for the perfect spinoff to the TLC reality dating show.

TLC lets fans know the spinoff will feature 40 former cast members and is set to premiere on April 20. TLC’s president and general manager, Howard Lee, told Variety about the spinoff in an exclusive interview. Lee says couples talking via video chat is obviously “already in their DNA.”

It is difficult to film any normal, scripted TV shows during the current coronavirus pandemic. However, with reality shows like 90 Day Fiancé, there is more wiggle room. This is potentially a great thing for basic cable channels, already well-stocked with footage to cover the production shutdown.

Cast self-filming for the spinoff

Normally, the production of 90 Day Fiancé is a major thing., It requires a whole camera crew to travel to different areas of the world. This spin-off is different. Here, the cast members of 90 Day Fiancé: Self-Quarantined have already started recording themselves for the spinoff.

Video chat will also be used to record confessional footage of the couples. Lee says while their crew is nowhere near the couples physically, they will aid them remotely along the way.

Meanwhile, the couples have no problems with the spinoff. In fact, Lee reckons they are seizing the opportunity and running with it. They love being able to show off their life at home.

Lee says the spinoff will be experimental and will look “hot-off-the-press” as if the “paint has not dried.” However, he does believe their audience is “incredibly forgiving” under the circumstances. Lee says they will take it as it is, even if a little messy.

How did TLC choose the cast members?

Some of the cast members are still living together, while others are solo. When planning the cast for 90 Day Fiancé: Self-Quarantined, Lee says they looked back over the six-year history of the show. That way, they could pick out the fan favorites – those TLC fans will be most interested to catch up with.

90 Day Fiancé: Self-Quarantined is set to run over five episodes, starting April 20 and carrying on through May. Lee was asked if there might be more if the show does well. He says at this time, it is a “one-time-only” event. Lee did say, however, if the audience really loves it, there may be “more down the road.”
