Everyone associated with the glittering world of movies demand recognition. The 92nd Academy Awards will be in 2020 and there is speculation on probable award winners. These are coveted awards and define the future course of the Hollywood stars. It also sets new standards for those who make the film and for those who act in them. Those who bag Academy Awards are those who have contributed significantly to the cause of the cinema. We know there are film festivals held regularly across the world in cities like Toronto, Venice, London and Cannes. Those platforms help to identify possible front-runners. Right now, the buzz for the top 20 in the 2020 awards appear to be revolving around a couple of biopic movies (‘A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood’ and ‘Judy’) apart from a crime based one (‘The Irishman’) and a comedy (‘JoJo Rabbit.’)
Brief look at four probables
‘Joker’ is a contender for 92nd Academy Awards. It stars Joaquin Phoenix who had to lose weight to fit into the role. His director Todd Phillips wanted him to get a “wolf-like and malnourished” look. The movie premiered at Venice Film Festival. It bagged the Golden Lion award plus an eight-minute standing ovation.
‘The Irishman’ is a crime movie with gangland background. Old hands like Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci add to the charm. Martin Scorsese directs it. He could add to his list of awards. Its running time is three-and-a-half-hour
The two biopics are ‘A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood’ and ‘Judy.’ The former is about Fred Rogers portrayed by Tom Hanks. He could hope for his third best actor award. The other biopic ‘Judy’ is on Hollywood legend Judy Garland. Renee Zellweger portrays the role and will expect recognition from Academy voters.
The fifth is a comedy
The fifth in the top five is ‘JoJo Rabbit.’ It is in the category of comedy. The story is about an invisible friend who happens to be Hitler. Normally, it cannot expect to be a natural Oscar contender. However, it could sprig a surprise. Scarlett Johansson leads the cast, and Taika Waititi directs it. He is in the role of Hitler. It took home the People’s Choice Award at Toronto Film Festival (TIFF). That is a positive. It could get nominated for the biggest Oscar of them all – best picture. Incidentally, most of the People’s Choice Winner have gone on to score best picture nominations. This could be another.
