“Twilight” star Robert Pattinson has been cast to play the Caped Crusader in “The Batman,” after beating out fellow Brit Nicholas Hoult.
Predictably, the decision has fueled controversy on social media. But that happens anytime a new actor is chosen to play an iconic superhero.
Pre-production on the Warner Brothers-DC Comics film is expected to start this summer, Variety reported.
Five-part “Twilight” saga made Pattinson a star
Robert Pattinson — who rocketed to superstardom playing a vampire in the blockbuster “Twilight” franchise, may not be everyone’s top choice to play Bruce Wayne/Batman.
However, he also wasn’t initially embraced by “Twilight” fans when he was cast as Edward Cullen. But once the films came out, the “Twilight” army loved him.
“The Batman” is being produced by Dylan Clark and will be directed by Matt Reeves, who was the executive producer of the hit TV series “Felicity” (from 1998-2002).
Twitter gave Rob mixed reviews
The most recent Batman was Ben Affleck, who played the Caped Crusader in 2016’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and in the 2017 flick “Justice League.” Both movies received mixed reviews and underperformed at the box office.
It seems executives wanted to go outside the box of what audiences typically expect from a Batman. Robert Pattinson is an unexpected mix of quirky charm and boyish good looks. It will be interesting to see what he brings to the action hero role.
Not surprisingly, Twitter was abuzz all day, with fans both cheering the move and hating it. But most seemed eager to give Pattinson a chance.
Some said the casting decision is terrible. One person groused: “This is the worst casting choice for a superhero film since they cast that pretty boy Heath Ledger as the Joker.”
It's official, Robert Pattinson is officially your new Batman, this is the worst casting choice for a superhero film since they cast that pretty boy Heath Ledger as the Joker, the Nolan films never quite recovered from that terrible decision. pic.twitter.com/Lrh4UUtfQ3

Another quipped: “Robert Pattinson will make a terrible Batman. However, I am always happy to be proven wrong.”

However, others approved and said they are “psyched” for the movie.

Hot take on Robert Pattinson: after Twilight, he could have had an easy career of flattering roles. Instead, he's mostly gone for unusual material with interesting people. So consider me PSYCHED for what this Batman might be.

Reminder: Pattinson has a massive built-in audience thanks to “Twilight.” To date, Rob’s films have grossed $1.7 billion at the worldwide box office.
“The Batman” will be released in June 2021.
Rob’s millions of “Twilight” groupies will support him in “The Batman.” Because they remember this:
