This instalment of the franchise, directed by Gary Dauberman, revolves around demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren. The demonologists are determined to prevent Annabelle from causing any more havoc. Consequently, Ed and Lorraine place the possessed doll in the locked artefacts room in their home.

One might think that placing Annabelle behind sacred glass and having a priest conduct a holy blessing would be enough to ensure everyone’s safety. The room in which the doll has been placed is anything but safe. There are numerous artefacts stored in this room which are every bit as dangerous as Annabelle. Annabelle wakens the spirits that reside in the other artefacts. Once awakened, the spirits set their sights on the Warrens’ ten-year-old daughter, Judy, and her friends.

Who is in the Film?

Cast members of The Conjuring series play a huge part of this production. Ed and Lorraine Warren, previously seen in the first two instalments of The Conjuring series, are once again played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, respectively. In 2020, these actors will return for The Conjuring 3.

In addition to Wilson and Farmiga, Steve Coulter is reprising his role as Father Gordon from The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2. Unfortunately for Sterling Jerins, being that she now looks too old to play the character, Judy Warren saw a recast. In Jerins place is Mckenna Grace. Jerins, now aged 14, previously played Judy in the first two instalments of The Conjuring series. Archival footage of the Warren family, Ed, Lorraine and Judy, is part of the first film in The Nun series. It is this footage that ties The Nun series into The Conjuring Universe.

Samara Lee and Joseph Bishara play the voices of Annabelle “Bee” Mullins and the demonic Annabelle, respectively. Judy’s babysitters, Mary Ellen and Daniela, are respectively played by Madison Iseman and Katie Sarife.

The Conjuring Universe Popularity

The Conjuring Universe, with six films under its belt, is a box office sensation. The figures do not lie. The global box office take for all six instalments of the franchise clearly indicate moviegoers have more than a passing interest. On a budget of only $6.5 million, the first instalment of the Annabelle series saw a global box office take of $257,047,661. Even thought the budget for the second Annabelle film saw an increase on the first instalment by $8.5 million, Annabelle: Creation saw a global box office return of $306,515,884.

The success of the franchise can only continue for so long. Everything has its breaking point. That is especially true of the entertainment industry. The current movie theater fad is multi-picture universes where we see characters crossover from one production to the next. It is only a matter of time before the bubble pops.  One day, maybe not tomorrow or next week, The Conjuring Universe will have had its day. Consequently, it will be time for producers to find something new for people to enjoy.

Future Conjuring Universe Instalments

Further to The Conjuring 3, scheduled for 2020, The Conjuring Universe will expand to include The Crooked Man and at least one more instalment of The Nun series. The release dates for both The Crooked Man and the second film in The Nun series is as of yet unknown.
