Amber (Elyse Dufour), the title character in The Night Sitter, seems like the average teenager looking to supplement her income by taking the occasional babysitting gig. Do not be deceived because first impressions will not help you with this teenager. Amber has a duplicitous nature which gives the ability to con her way past almost anyone. Because Ted (Joe Walz) is taking his neighbour Charlotte (Deanna Meske) out on a date, he hires Amber to babysit his son Kevin (Jack Champion). Because Kevin is somewhat reclusive, Ted’s son likes the privacy of his own bedroom.
Joining Kevin and Amber for the evening is Charlotte’s less than pleasant son Ronnie (Bailey Campbell). Even though Ronnie is not typical of children his age, he is the type of kid that makes me glad I don’t have children. Hopefully, Campbell is not like the obnoxiously horrid Ronnie in real life.
Once both Ted and Charlotte are out of the way, Amber immediately begins to case the mansion. Even though there are two children in the house, the babysitter gets Rod (Jermaine Rivers), Lindsey (Amber Neukum) and boyfriend-ish Martin (J. Benedict Larmore) to help her with emptying the house of everything valuable. Martin thinks of Amber as his girlfriend, girlfriends don’t behave as she does to him.
When children are told to not go in a room, the first thing they typically do is attempt to get in that room. It’s what naughty children do. Do you know children like that?
Unbeknownst to Amber, even though Ted explicitly told both the babysitter and his son that the study is off-limits, Kevin and Ronnie manage to gain access to the room. It is in the study where Ted keeps his most prized possessions. When the two boys happen upon a cursed book with immense power, they accidentally summon the Three Mothers from Hell. The execution of The Three Mothers, a trio of Salem witches, took place centuries ago. They back and looking for fresh blood.
When the witches trap everyone in the mansion and set forth a plan in which they intend to use Kevin as their sacrificial lamb, Amber takes responsibility to save the boy and send the Three Mothers back to where they came from.
Vincent (Ben Barlow), a heavy metal geek and witchcraft-obsessed nerd, lives in the garage attached to the neighbour’s house. Is he just waving at Amber every opportunity he gets because he wants in her pants?
Are You Sitting Comfortably?
The Night Sitter, scheduled for release in these United States on Tuesday, 6 August 2019, is a blood-splattered horror comedy with more than a modicum of neon. If you are thinking the Abiel Bruhn and John Rocco co-written/directed film is reminiscent of certain classic 1980s horror flicks, the ones produced on a low budget, you’d be partially correct. As well as being a comedy horror, the production has elements of a heist film.
Do we want any of the characters to make it out of the house alive? While I am not entirely sure anyone would care if Campbell’s character is bled dry, the same is probably not true for Champion’s Kevin. The film ends with a neighbour opening the front door to the Hooper residence and coming face to face with a real horror story.
Please let us know what you think of the film. Please comment, like and share at will.
For a low budget production, the the production excels. Working on special effects for the film was Ben Rittenhouse. If you do not know the name, you might at least know some of the productions he worked on prior to putting his mark on The Night Sitter. Between 2001 and 2018, some of the productions he worked on included Men in Black II, Kill Bill: Vol. 1, Kill Bill: Vol. 2, The Reaping, and The Haunting Hour: Don’t Think About It. Further to Rittenhouse, from cinematography to film editing on through to makeup, the entire behind the scenes crew was filled with highly talented professionals with years of experience under the belts.
