In a conversation with independent singer/songwriter Sarah Blacker, Blacker posed the question: “What’s your favorite song about a pet?” That was all it took to inspire this now resurrected series “Animal Tracks.” So, without further adieu, here is the newest sampling of beast ballads, creature cuts, and other assorted animal audios in a revamp of the old series.

“Bluebirds Over The Mountain” — Beach Boys

This track was recorded by the Beach Boys. It’s a cover of a song by rockabilly artist Ersel Hickey. (The song was also covered by Ritchie Valens and Robert Plant.) This version is off the American rock band’s 15th studio vinyl titled 20/20 which was released in 1969.

“The Crippled Lion” — The Monkees

Next is this rarity off a compilation album by the American group The Monkees called Missing Links Volume Two which was released in 1990. The song was written and co-produced by Michael Nesmith. Despite being on a Monkees album, no other Monkees were credited as performing on the track.

“Cumberland Mountain Bear Chase” — Pete Seeger

This song is about chasing down a bear. It was written by Uncle Dave Mason. It was recorded by singer, songwriter, performing protester, and famous folk artist Pete Seeger. The song is currently available on the 1996 release known as A Link in the Chain.

“Dark Horse” — Katy Perry (featuring Juicy J)

This one is by American singer Katy Perry. It features rapper Juicy J. The song was co-written by the two recording artists along with singer Sarah Hudson and producers Cirkut, Sarah Hudson, Dr. Luke, and Max Martin. It’s the lead single off Perry’s 2013 CD Prism.

“Eye of the Tiger” — Survivor

Finally, this one is by the American rock band Survivor. It was first released as a single in 1982. The track is off their third disc of the same name. It’s also famous for being the theme song for the movie Rocky III. It was written by guitarist Frankie Sullivan and keyboardist Jim Peterik.
