The positive reaction to a couple of your rockin’ writer’s (now offline) articles on downloading free music and previous conversations with some indie musicians about “free music” brought to mind one of several articles written for a now-defunct music website. Today there are lots of online businesses and websites where one can download (at least) a free song a day.

Indeed, enough websites are offering free music downloads that it gave birth to an online series. Whether or not all those free tunes online is a good or bad thing for musicians and singers is, of course, a topic of debate for another time and another place. Here we seek only to share websites where music aficionados can partake of gratis audio offerings in numerous genres and from various eras as well. (Peruse the following list and discover a recent sampling of said sites.)

SoundClick

Some music fans say SoundClick is “the best place to download music directly from individual acts’ websites. Indeed, there are numerous performers on this platform offering their own music for free. You can also download free tunes or purchase licensed songs here legally.

You can peruse a large collection of tracks available sorted by genre. Once you have signed up on the site, you can download or stream them according to your specific needs. The UI is not overly friendly and the website is a bit cluttered.
Nevertheless, there are some noteworthy features here. You can interact with other listeners in the forum. You can also create your own custom radio station, learn about all your fave SoundClick acts, and even send out personalized e-cards to others with holiday themes complete with your choice of background music.

He also likes that there are no advertisements. It features both unlimited free life-time video and MP3 music conversions and downloads. There is no installation or software registration required.

Archive.org. is also a worthy site for music. This site specializes in a collection of regular mp3s which feature a great body of out-of-copyright music. Presently this is of special interest to fans of pre-1950s music. However, there are many songs—including some early Beatles songs—that have become public domain. Additionally, they have recently added an entire body of contemporary cuts that are available under a Creative Commons license.
