Something in music: origin

One evening at a hot, trendy L.A. night club on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had taken more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.

One of the young ladies noted that when a gal is about to get hitched she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those very same terms could be applied to music too: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed” (a cover), and “something blue” (a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title. The rest is history.

Something old

“Something old” this time is a flashback to the now offline first edition of the series, “Something.” by the Brit band the Beatles. Written by George Harrison, it was first included on the Beatles’ 1969 platter Abbey Road. A 2019 Super Deluxe Edition of the famous album includes a studio demo of the song.

Something new

Our “something new” here is The Whining Pussys’ new video for their official theme song. It’s aptly titled “Whining Pussy Theme (Official Music Video).” The video was directed by Ed Shiers.

For those not up on all their indie artists, the Whining Pussys are fro Huntington, Beach, California. Their signature sound is a mix of musical genres including pop, punk, and rock. In the words of the band, it’s a “blend of punk, humor, angst, and pop sensibility.” The current band roster includes founder Clark McSteven (guitar and vocals), Kyle Zemblidge (guitar), Steve Gonzalez (bass) and Daryl Clar (drums).

Something borrowed

Our “something borrowed” is Joe Cocker’s cover of The Beatles’ “Something.” George Harrison gave the song to Cocker in March of 1969. Cocker’s version appears on his Joe Cocker! album. The disc dropped in 1972. The song has also been covered by Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, James Brown, Musiq Soulchild, and others.

Something blue

Today’s “something blue” is “Yer Blues (2018 Mix)” by the legendary Brit band the Beatles.  The song was first recorded on August 13, 1968. It first appeared on their 1968 double album The Beatles (a.k.a. “the White Album”). It was written by John Lennon. The song parodies English artists imitating American blues artists.
